Vietnam Poomsae in Chuncheon: All Three 2026 World Golds Came From Team Events

On the final medal table of the 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, all three lines carrying Vietnam's name sit in team events: the freestyle team, the U50 standard women's team, and the U50 standard mixed pair. Not one belongs to an individual category. Vietnam walks into the arena in Chuncheon, South Korea with a gold model so clear it is easy to misread: strong where several people must move as one, thin where one person must stand alone.

Poomsae is the performance branch of taekwondo, fully separated from sparring. In the recognized category, the judging panel scores on two axes: accuracy and presentation. In freestyle, the scorecard is split across technique, difficulty and presentation. There is no opponent to defeat, no weight class to cut, no knockout to count. The entire result rests with the people sitting in judgment.

The World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships are held every two years, divided into cadet, junior, U30 and U50 age groups. This edition takes place in Chuncheon, South Korea. Vietnam brings 39 athletes and 11 coaches, with a six-athlete U50 core treated as the technical spine: Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim, Lien Thi Tuyet Mai, Nguyen Thien Phung, Le Thanh Trung and Nguyen Van Truong. Preparation has run continuously since the start of the year in Ho Chi Minh City, plus a training camp in South Korea.

At the 2026 edition, South Korea took 17 gold medals. Vietnam took 3, tied fourth with Iran, behind the United States and Chinese Taipei. That gap is structural, not a matter of luck.

The first thing worth stating plainly: poomsae rewards age. Points come from posture, rhythm, amplitude and clean hand paths — things accumulated over years rather than at a physiological peak. A 45-year-old athlete can still be an asset, which would be close to unthinkable in any combat discipline.

Team events are a variance-reduction tool in a subjectively judged sport. In an individual category, each small error becomes its own deduction line and the panel holds full discretion over its size. In a team category, six athletes hitting one rhythm narrows the deduction band: individual error dissolves into the whole, while synchronization becomes a separate point of credit. From the poomsae events I have rewatched on tape, this pattern repeats — teams with strong synchronization tend to benefit beyond their real technical margin. That is the technical reason, not the emotional one, why Vietnam's gold window sits in team and pair events.

The direct consequence: Chau Tuyet Van is the load-bearing athlete. She is entered in two standard categories, women's individual and women's team. In the team event she is the rhythm anchor; in the individual event she is Vietnam's entry into a far deeper draw. If she holds form across both competition days, the delegation's medal tally almost follows her.

The second lane is the youth pipeline. The U30 freestyle pair of Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang and Nguyen Xuan Thanh is registered as an investment aimed at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. Vietnam therefore runs at two speeds: a U50 core winning now, a U30 group apprenticing and accumulating international experience.

And this is where I could be wrong.

Chuncheon is Korean soil, the cradle of taekwondo, where the host nation has just won 17 golds. Judging panels in performance disciplines always carry a nationality composition, and in a sport scored by eye, home advantage does not live in the stands — it lives in the deduction band. A visiting delegation chasing gold usually has to win clearly, not narrowly.

The second risk is heavier: reading three golds from 2026 as proof of a system. Some campaigns deliver through a favorable draw and one inspired day, and then fail to repeat. In the summer of 2026 I said something that made everyone laugh. Now they call me for tips. But this trade taught me that being right once does not validate a method, and three team golds do not automatically prove Vietnam has individual depth.

If Vietnam harvests gold in Chuncheon with this group without building a replacement class for standard individual categories, the next edition will be a different race entirely.

People who say I was lucky in Tokyo? They forget I placed the bet before the opening whistle. I am placing this one before the delegation departs: Vietnam leaves Chuncheon with at least two gold medals, and both come from team or pair events.
