In the AFC meeting room, Tran Quoc Tuan sat there — the only Vietnamese in the room that decides on competition formats, match schedules, and slot allocations for national teams across the entire continent. The 2026 Asian Games has a format anomaly: the men's football competition features 15 teams instead of the usual 16. This results in one group having only three teams, creating an imbalance in rest intervals between matches. And there is a question few ask: does having a Vietnamese official simultaneously hold three positions of power — Chairman of the AFC Competitions Committee deciding formats, AFC Executive Committee member deciding policy, and head of Asian Games football operations — create a potential conflict of interest? The pitch does not lie — but administrative corridors have very fragile boundaries. Data only keeps the rhythm — emotions are the ones who sing. And for Vietnam U23, emotions are running high. The historical record against Uzbekistan at youth level is not a happy story — Uzbekistan has always been one of Asia's strongest youth football nations. Kuwait and the Philippines, though not at the same level, always carry surprises in youth football. The schedule of one match every three days in the first eight days poses a challenge of fitness and squad rotation.
